Horned Owl, Chile
Behind the frame
This young Megallanic Horned Owl was keeping watch from a tree next to its mother in the National Reserve of the Magallenes near Punta Arenas in Chile. The park guard was kind enough to quietly point them out to us in a way that we had the opportunity to take these photos. I assume they had spent the night hunting and were now taking a breather.
I love the little ear tufts and the eyebrows. The mum was asleep nearby, but the young one was much more interested in me taking photos with my long telephoto lens. The species is not threatened and you can see them across a wide range in South America according to Wikipedia.
